pfSense Installation Guide using USB Flash Drive

To install and setup pfSense, you will need to download pfSense and Rufus utility software, extract pfSense.  Insert USB flash drive, and run Rufus, then add pfSense.img to the installer utility.

Recomended Software

  • pfSense
  • Rufus
  • Recomended Hardware
  • Desktop computer
    •  Using Dell Optiplex 9020 for this setup
  • USB flash drive

What pfSense

pfSense is an open source router/firewall computer software distribution based on the FreeBSD.   pfSense is flexible by design and can be used in multiple application.  I will not list them all but here are some of the applications, home network router, firewall, VPN router, DHCP/DNS server, wireless access point, and more…

What is Rufus

Rufus is a small software application / utility that creates bootable USB drives.  It can be used to run or install various operating systems platforms such as Windows, or Linux

Create USB Flash Drive Installer

Download pfSense

pfSense Download Image Selections and Installer options may vary.  Below selections are based on my hardware and installation setup which requires a USB flash drive

  • Go to pfSense.org/download
  •  Select an Architecture: AMD64 (64-bit)
    1. Since I am installing pfSense on Dell desktop computer my  selection is AMD64(64-bit)
  •  Select Installer: USB Memstick Installer
  • Console: VGA
  • Mirror: New York City, USA
    1. You can select a Mirror that is close to your geographical area
  • Hit Download
  • Open the installation file to extract the  downloaded image pfSense-CE-memstick-2.4.5-RELEASE-p1-amd64(1).img
  • Use 7-Zip to extract the image from .gz extension to .img

Download Rufus

  • Go to https://rufus.ie
  • Scroll down and hit the link Rufus 3.15 Portable (or newer version)
  • Launch Rufus-3.15p.exe
Rufus Drive Properties

Device: select the USB flash drive

Boot Selection: select the pfSense extracted image

  • Hit the Start button
  • Warning popup windows appears stating that all data on the USB flash drive will be destroyed.  Hit Ok to continue
  • Close Rufus when installation is completed

pfSense Installation Walkthrough

  • Insert the USB flash drive into your new router/firewall computer
  • Turn on the computer and during POST hit either Esc, F2, F10 or F12 (this may vary depeneds on your computer manufacturer)
  • Select Boot Device: UEFI: your USB device
  • pfSense Installer will start
  • Use the bootable USB flash drive the pfSense loader menu will be displayed
  • In few seconds pfSense will continue to boot to the Copyright and distribution notice, press Enter to Accept
  • Welcome screen, Install pfSense is selected by default.  Press the Enter key to continue
  • At the Keymap Selection screen Continue with default keymap is selected by default.  Press the Enter key to Select the default settings and continue
  • Partitioning screen, Auto (UFS) BIOS is selected by default.  Press the Enter Key to continue
  • Partition screen, the Entire Disk is selected by default.  Press the Enter key to continue
  • Press the Enter Key again when the Confirmation windows opens up, it is asking Are you sure you want to proceed?
  • Partition Scheme window, GPT GUID Partition Table is selected by default.  Press the Enter key to continue
  • Partition Editor window make sure you select the computer hard disk drive where your want pfSense installed, then press the Enter Key to Finish
  • Manual Configuration window select No and press Enter to continue
  • Complete Window screen indicates that the installation is complete.  Make sure you remove the USB flash drive then press the Enter key to Reboot

After Reboot

pfSense Network Interface Assignment

Should VLAN be set up now [y/n]? n

Enter the WAN interface name or ‘a’ for auto-detection

(re0 re1 or a): check my connection
